Hennie de Vries started his Budo career in 1971 as a full-time student (uchi dechi) in Cape Town, South Africa.
He has had over 45 years’ professional experience in successfully teaching, coaching and practicing highly skilled forms of karate and Kobudo at an International level.
As part of his professional standards, He maintains a high level of fitness, a sound knowledge of physical education and of Martial Arts.
Hennie has travelled several times to Japan and lived for one year in Okinawa in 1992, in pursuit of improving his Martial Arts knowledge. He studied Goju Ryu Karate and Ryukyu Kobudo under Master Uehara Ko. In 2014 Hennie returned to train in Okinawa and was awarded Master Grade Shihan as well as being graded Godan (5th degree) by the Ryukyu Kobudo Shimbukan.
He is currently a 7th Dan in Goju Ryu Karate UFAK , has a Teaching certification and Dojo licence from the Ryukyu Kobudo Hozon Shinko Kai.
Hennie enjoys working with people and seeing them grow to achieve their goals. The highlight of teaching karate to both adults and children is seeing them empowered with confidence, skills for self-defence and increased fitness.
Currently Hennie is Head of School of Martial Arts, Doncaster East, a dojo he established when he immigrated to Australia in 1999.
